The 2010 Féile an Phobail in West Belfast presents ‘Heroes in Hoops’
in The West Club on Tuesday 3rd August,at 9pm. Tickets available at the Feile website.
‘Heroes in Hoops’ is the story of the demise of Belfast Celtic and is one tale that refuses to go away. It is a tale of mystery and intrigue about a club trying to exist in a society haunted by political skulduggery and sectarianism.

July opening for Belfast Celtic Museum

The opening of the display of Belfast Celtic memorabilia is now set for Saturday 3rd of July. The permanent exhibition will be in a shop unit at the Park Centre which was established on the old Celtic Park site.

The Belfast Celtic Society invites you to share in this celebration of the history of the Grand Old Team at the unveiling of this unique display of photographs and memorabilia. Venue: The Park Centre, Belfast on Saturday 3rd of July 2010 at 12.00 noon.

Belfast Celtic Museum to open in Paradise

Thanks to the hard work of the Belfast Celtic Society,the city will see a permanent museum to the Grand Old Team on the sacred ground that once was Celtic Park,the Holy Ground which hosted the greatest team in Ireland Belfast Celtic.

Many will not remember the team who fell victim to sectarianism and exited the Irish League in 1949,many will not remember the dog track that later made use of the facilities and unfortunately many of the younger generation will only remember the site as a shopping centre.

Belfast Celtic chairman Hugh McAlinden had been informed about Jimmy’s potential when he was scoring goals regularly for Glentoran Reserves in 1934. “Get him” he told his board. Within days he had been offered professional terms to join Celtic, the club he had supported from schoolboy days.

Jimmy Overend is 85 years old and has been a lifelong Celtic supporter. He lives in St James' in the shadow of the former Celtic Park site. He sent this letter to the Belfast Celtic Society whilst renewing his membership.

How a Belfast Celtic winger saved Barcelona FC

Patrick Joseph O'Connell, born in Dublin in 1887, joined the famous Belfast Celtic Football Club in 1909, playing as a wing-half or centre-half. before moving on to Sheffield Wednesday in the old first division. From there he moved on to Hull City and later Manchester United who signed him, for the 1914 season.

Belfast Celtic: The Grand Old Team

On Boxing Day 1948, forty thousand spectators gathered in Belfast for the traditional derby game between Linfield and Belfast Celtic at Windsor Park, Linfield's home ground. No one could have anticipated the impact of a horrifically violent incident at the end of the game which was to signal the demise of one of the greatest clubs in the history of Irish football.
